The cities in Praelia and the surrounding lands are medium to large settlements of people. Unlike villages and towns, the city is a place of over 250 people and requires a stronger governing body than the smaller places.
three primary forms of government are found at the city level. Although these exist in smaller communities as well, they are requisite for greater populations.
the most common type is a Kingdom County. This is where kingdom officials and a Noble council governs the people. A castellan and chancellery handles all municipal duties and a noble reports to the Kingdom. This model is found in all larger cities and capitals throughout the Kingdom.
the second most common type is where a Noble Household is granted control over a region. This is often necessary because of the sheer size of the kingdom. In exchange for the right to rule their territory, noble houses are expected to govern the people who live within- To provide a reasonably good life for the citizens and to provide taxes and other services to the kingdom. This reduces the level of stress on the kingdom infrastructure.
the third type is a point of contention within the kingdom. A faction or barony may often claim territory and thus be recognized as ruler of the land. Generally this is done with a willing populace- although faction occupations do occur. Factions are expected to govern within the same basic rights as any citizens of the kingdom, though they are often subject to the ruling styles of the Faction in control. The adage, “When in Rome” certainly applies here.
So long as the people don’t complain too much, the kingdom does not intervene. However the nobles might find take any opportunity to shake things up when it benefits them.

Plague cured in Victusburg!
The coastal gem of Azara has produced a new cure to the recent Miasma Hagaria plaguing the region. Castellan and Chief chiurgeon Jerry Jones and master Physician Louis Maimbourg spent the last four months locked down in the college working on a cure and have found success. The cure involves Trepanning victims to remove the miasma which was found to settle on the lower quarter of the brain. While this is generally applied to the dead before Return, due to Altarian Law it is prohibited to perform the procedure on the living unless given proper authority by the Duke. As Duke Coronado is still away on voyage, missives have been sent to Prince Markham to gain authorization.
Duke Ramon postulates the Demonic war
“God, When I was alone, and had nothing, I asked for a friend to help me bear the pain, No one came, except God, When I needed a breath to rise, from my sleep, No one could help me.. except God, When all I saw was sadness, and I needed answers, No one heard me, except God, So when I'm asked.. who I give my unconditional love to? I look for no other name, except God.”
Granite Spire profile preview
Granite Spire: Kingdom’s greatest threat
The Granite Spire would have one think that they are just another faction. All factions want power, but most of them are honest about it. This spire however is truly duplicitous.
my reconnaissance within the Spire brought clarity that I now report to you all.
ever notice so many Granite Spire members are present in chancellor’s chambers? It is because they are the dark puppet masters behind so many nobles. How? Money. I will get to that.
the spire’s entire hierarchy is rules by the so-called Rules of order. Written by Spire General Hallvadar Olaf Rodgeirr, these culminate in promotion based upon infiltration into the workings of guild and nobility across the kingdom. For every noble rank, for every guild rank, even every command rank- all given toward advancement within the spire. It is all about control!
more to come!

A deeper look into the Granite Spire
The next few weeks will look deeper into the faction known as the Granite Spire.
As one of the younger factions, the spire hasn’t had the pedigree of some of the older factions in the land. Not much is known about what happens within the walls of those spire shaped compounds wherein they make their territorial claim. Not for a sense of cloistered defiance by the spire, mind you, but simply because not too many who join the ranks of the Granite Guardians ever leave and generally factions rarely volunteer their professional practices.
Everyone knows the spire badge, that rook shaped tower with two windows and a door, gray like their namesake on a field of blue. There are, however, a few variants to this badge that could indicate a division in ranks or hierarchy within the faction.
Based solely on observation, this badge appears to have something do do with domestic chores. Perhaps this is the role of the weaker membership, the women and the children. What appears to be a spoon and a brush are emerging from behind the badge, implying that the spire itself protects these members.
Without additional context, this badge looks to be the mark of those who would be the historians of the faction. The spire appears on top of a book, as if to indicate that the authors of this book are placing the story of the spire onto the pages.
This badge is worn by a few of the more prominent fighters. This is clearly a badge of some sort of warrior caste, designed to show the prowess of the spire being flanked or supported on either side by axes and bill hooks, which seem to be a favorite weapon set of the spire fighters.
This final badge is a mystery to me. It seems to feature a roof above the spire. A roof often implies a governing body, which could give some credence to the rumors of a secret council within the spire that is seeking to control much of Kingdom by imposing a presence throughout the land. Hard to tell.
I will tell you more as it becomes available.
