From the rules lawyer: Life expectancy

So I was in a battle last week and saw a young man running from the barber surgeon’s tent repeatedly- with a massive gut wound.
Color me impressed. This kid had heart.
of course he could have died. But how risky was it? So I looked at the charts.
If shock and blood loss are based on Stamina, Clearly the more stamina you have the better your chances.
but the I said, how much time does one have? A barber once told me that if caught early enough, he could treat even a normally fatal wound and the patient survives. So how much time do I have to get medical attention?

look at what I came up with. The way I see it, you have a lot more time to make it than one might think. Don’t give up on me if you see me fall- get me to the surgeon!

New Outlook on Adventure?

New Outlook Rules

The Outlook of a character is the conscience and temperament that forms the basis for morality and behavior.  A player needs to utilize these two primary statistics in order to quantify roleplaying psychological stimuli.  While this is a defining baseline for attitude and behavior, it is not a cardboard caricature.  The character is not bound to the same actions but is given a spectrum of  behavior based upon their worldview.

The Conscience is the root morality of the persona.  This is derived from four basic archetypes and the willpower of the character.  This morality is shaped from experiences and education over time.  The Temperament is the standard modus operandi for the persona.   While moods will vary from day to day, this is the basic attitude description for character behavior.

This will determine much about how the character is role-played. It is not necessary to display these traits at all times, but they do affect the way you react to a situation. Moods can change, particularly with the temperament, however the outlook is who the character is and a WILL Roll may be necessary to act against your Outlook.

Keep in mind that culturally speaking, different outlooks will be perceived differently. What may considered abhorrent behavior by the French might be high society to the Romans. With so many cultures and historical periods in one place, decorum and morality often clash.

Changing an outlook is possible, although it should not be done often. The Arbitrator and the player should determine if a change in outlook is needed and if the circumstances have made it logical. Sometimes, the actions of a persona or the events happening over a course of time to the persona will give cause for the Arbitrator to justify changing the outlook for a player. As with all things it should be a logical change and rare.

The conscience is divided into four archetypes as follows:

  • Heroic: You look at the world as if you are but part of the whole.  Your goals are important, but so is the greater good.  Ultimately, when faced with a crisis of morality, you choose the needs of the many over the needs of the few.

  • Sinister: You look at the world as if it is there to facilitate your existence.   You are not evil, but your goals are simply more important than those of others that run counter to yours.  When faced with a crisis of morality, you choose the needs of yourself over the needs of others.

  • Fanatic:  You have found a code of ethics and follow it exactly. Morality does not interfere with the letter of your code. Your actions are seen as stubborn and foolhardy at times, but you are not insane and will bend when needed, but you are dedicated to your cause.   When facing a crisis of morality, you follow your code above all others.

  • Apathetic:  You generally could not care less about anything. You are seen as unreliable or at times worthless by some and amicable or easy-going to others.  The truth is that you believe in doing whatever is expected in the situation.  You will follow a leader where possible, otherwise when facing a crisis of morality, you opt to follow whatever precedent is set by law or others before you.

Choosing the Outlook

To pick the Conscience, first take 6 points and put them in any of the four categories.  Each must have at least one to start.  Next take the value of the WILL from the persona and add one point for each WILL to any of the consciences up to a total of 6.  Additional Willpower bought with EXP will likewise improve the conscience in this fashion.

Conscience can also be changed by roleplaying effort.  Temperament is likewise chosen at character creation, but may be changed permanently as determined by the Arbitrator due to roleplaying.

Crisis of Morality

When a persona is faced with a decision that might pose a moral dilemma, it is called a crisis of morality.  In these occasions the choice must be made to act according to one’s conscience or to act against this morality to a different end.  This means that the two (or sometimes more) options must be weighed and judged.

To determine action, the player will roll their appropriate conscience vs the corresponding conscience to see if they how they follow.  Much like the fabled angel and devil on the shoulders, whichever conscience value rolls higher will determine action.

Should another player attempt to talk a player our of actions that would run according to their conscience, they would roll their CHA vs the WILL of the player first to determine if they can force the player to enter a crisis of morality.

Example:

Jacques Le Peyton discovered that the small town with abnormal riches was taking advantage of a witch’s child.  Knowing that this child was barely a year old but capable of granting wishes and changing reality meant that in the wrong hands this child could become a tyrant’s tool or worse, grow up to be a monster herself.   Jacques was faced with a Crisis of Morality - to destroy the heretical child and end the threat or to allow a clearly innocent child to live and risk a greater threat.

Jacques rolled his Heroic 3 (the needs of the many) vs his Fanatic 3 (Law says never harm innocents or children) for a result of (H)3,6,2 and (F) 2,5,1.  In this case, the needs of the many (Heroic Conscience) won the day and Jacques destroyed the child as he wept at what he had to do.

Example:

In Breitenburg, when Phillip was fighting the vampire lord Raziel, Phillip became aware that Raziel was no longer an empowered vampire.   His code told him not to kill the weak mortal, but Cadhla made the case that Raziel will just come after them or others again.  He rolled his CHA (3,5) vs Phillip’s WILL (6,3,4) and was unsuccessful.  Phillip did not roll Crisis of Morality and left the room, Raziel lived for a few more moments - until Cadhla, who had less conflicting morality, finished the job.

Note: These rules are optional to existing rules for Outlook found in the core rulebook.  The Arbitrator should establish which ruleset she will be using during the adventure.

Staging a Coup?

Five Great Stages

It is said that in the Kingdom there are but five stages that are truly auspicious.  These are homes to the arts surpassing even the most opulent opera houses.  These playhouses are famed and revered by the academy with great honor - so much so that they are considered as holy sites are to the church.

The bards who get to perform on these stages have truly earned their name, for not just anyone may be part of a performance here - even in the orchestral pit or as chorus.  The five are spread throughout the land.

Breitenburg: Third Globe Theatre

1055.JPG

The Third Globe Theater is a huge enclosed building, built to the specifications of the original Globe Theater.  The theater is located on Fezziwig Lane next to the Juniper Bathhouse.  Here the finest artists will sing and dance, plays and entire seasons of theater are performed.  The theater is so revered that it has survived two fires of late, being rebuilt greater than before.

Cormick: Alluvium Colosseum

In the Italian Circle of Cormick sits the famous Alluvium Colosseum.  A stone house with a removable roof, this mammoth building was constructed to serve as a gladiatorial arena on par with that of Rome.  However, in time the brutality of combative life made it fall out of favor as an arena, and the Academy took control of it.  Now the great arts are performed from within.

Nicholshire: Haring Stage

Notable in the Noble’s Quarter, the Haring Stage is a smaller stage than some of the others, but it is a destination for any important show or act.  Built above the floor are a series of balconies floating in such a way as to provide the best possible seats for the nobles who wish to watch the arts and of course be seen at the events.  Next to the Hall of Bells, this is the most likely spot to find Nicholshire nobility.

Maxwell's Hollow: The Playhouse

Simply known as the Playhouse, this cavernous wonder was discovered when the academy came to settle in to the Hollow.  A natural cave of immense proportions, this stage has some of the most amazing acoustics in the world.  Some say there are places wherein one could whisper one direction and have a single recipient hear the message across the hall.   Truly magnificent to behold, the Playhouse is beyond grand, it is perfection.

Westershire: Grand Elsinore Stage

The newest of the grand stages, the Noble House of Elsinore in Westershire recently commissioned this phenomenon.  While it is called stage, it is in reality 4 different stages.  One grand auditorium for the greatest of shows, but with two smaller rooms for private shows and another midrange theater that is a truly unique piece of engineering skill.  This third room is capable of being built with movable walls and doors, hidden areas for seating and viewing.  The whole places is designed to be immersive so that the audience is in the show.  The actors who put of events here are trained to act around the viewers in such as way as to interact without interaction.

What the Bard?

All You Need Is Love

Empathy 3, Performance 3, Seduction 3

65669448_2384631411580840_8762528445495246848_n.jpg

Utilizing their Finesse, the Bard can sway their target into an amorous emotional bond with the subject they choose.  Feelings of infatuation and desire will overtake the target.  While this does not create true love, it does overtake the target and cause them to consider and pursue romantic avenues with the subject. Sometimes, however, real emotions are uncovered and true love is found after all.

• For each level, roll 1d6. Total of roll is a CV for Finesse roll vs target’s WILL.  Roll.  Of a 6 gives target 1d6 FEL for WILL vs the procedure.  A roll of a 1 will negate a 6.

Chaos returns to Kingdom

Recently the portal at Cormick erupted with brilliant displays of multi-colored light. The sounds of a cannonade were heard across the land and terrifying creatures, including dragons, from the Dark World have come out to assault our world. Not enough is known at this time to say what is happening, but initial theories are directed at interference by the Nurnberg, Griffon’s Gambit and Brotherhood of Balor alliance tearing across the west.

1315-great-famine.jpg

Far Hampton and most of the Hampton Roads remain behind the line of demarkation set by Valeeria in their war with Nurnberg.

Duke Valguard has closed Jormungandr, the Unbound have sent reports of slaying 10 dragons already.

Breitenburg’s guard has sent patrols to keep the middle-land free from incursions.

Castellan Wallace dispatched Fallsburn workers to search the Drakwald for open elf circles and is closing them.

Trenton, north of Victusburg, was laid to waste by dragonfire.

ShadeHaven is currently under assault by an army of Orcs.

Duke Ramon has issued a Kingdomwide bounty for the Crane Brothers to be returned, alive.

Reports of Trolls wandering the Valley of Krymm threaten the area.

Grand Master Dunbar of the White Talbot Order has initiated survey of the region to ensure safety or egress.

More to come.

Two cycles ago the world was wracked by the barbarian hoard of Duke Drachen. Were it not for the heroics of several intrepid adventurers and the great Tanaka the Dragon Slayer, the kingdom would have fallen.
Last year the congregation of Pastor Wilcoxen summoned the Godsend star to collide with the world. They were convinced that the only way to salvation was mass extinction. Wilcoxen was unsuccessful in destroying the world with the Godsend star.
Now they are back and have the body of Drachen. Their goal, bring the Dragon back to life and use him to burn the Kingdom of Praelia bring about Armageddon once and for all.

From the Bardic Academy

Good day students, welcome to the academy.  I am your instructor, conductor and preceptor.  Gather round the table and listen to my tale, make merry whilst you can for this is the last of the ale.   For you anyway that is to say.  For now that is to be.   The studies you will undergo here are of the greatest importance.  You are the ones who have the most gravitas duties in the entire land.  For it is the jesters, the musicians, the poets, playwrights, actors and orators who bear that burden, to tell the story of us all.  Yes there are chroniclers and librarians, those who would call themselves historians.  You may even be among their membership as well.  But where the Guild of Chroniclers may record facts, know lists and histories within their tomes, we record the story of the land.  It is for us to note the why, not simply the who, where and what of the events.   This very same dichotomy traces up to our government wherein we have a Chancellor of Registries that is of the Chronicler’s Guild and our own Chancellor of Histories that is out of our own Bardic Academy.   Two similar fields, but vastly different in the end result.
